How and When Should You Fertilize Indoor Plants in India?

Most indoor plants are killed by too much feeding, not too little. Here is a season-by-season guide to fertilizing indoor plants in India, what to use, and when to stop.

More indoor plants are damaged by overfeeding than by starving. Feeding a plant that is not actively growing does nothing but burn the roots and salt the soil. In India, the trick is to match feeding to the seasons, not to a fixed monthly routine.

Why does feeding matter less than people think?

A plant in a small pot uses up the food in its compost within a few months, but it also grows slowly through most of the year. In the monsoon it slows down, and in winter it nearly stops. Feed only when the plant is actively growing, and use a weak dose. Too much fertiliser is a far more common cause of brown leaf tips than too little.

What is the best fertilizer for indoor plants in India?

A balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertiliser is the easiest to control. Dilute it to half the strength on the label, and feed it in the water you would give the plant anyway. Slow-release granules are convenient, but they keep releasing even when the plant is resting, so skip them for indoor plants. Compost tea and diluted seaweed work well too if you prefer something natural.

When should you feed indoor plants in India?

SeasonWhat to do
March to May (growing)Feed every two to four weeks, lightly
June to September (monsoon)Cut right back, once a month at most
October to February (winter)Do not feed. The plant is resting

How do you apply it without harming the plant?

  1. Water the plant a day before you feed, so the roots are not thirsty and cannot be burned.
  2. Use half the recommended dose.
  3. Pour the diluted feed onto the soil, not the leaves.
  4. Skip feeding a newly repotted plant for a month. Fresh compost already has food.

When should you never feed an indoor plant?

Do not feed a plant that is struggling, in winter, or recently repotted. Fertiliser does not create light, and a plant that cannot photosynthesise cannot use it. Fix the light and the watering first, and feed only once it is growing again.

Where should you start?

If you are new to indoor plants, start with forgiving ones from our indoor plants range, and feed them only in the growing months. Herbs like tulsi and mint respond well to light feeding in summer.
