Snake plant care in Indian homes
Snake plant is the hardest houseplant to kill, as long as you get one thing right.

If you want one plant that survives travel, forgetfulness and a dark corner, this is it. Snake plant asks almost nothing. The one thing it will not forgive is wet feet.
Water once a month, less in the rains
That is not a typo. Snake plant stores water in its leaves and comes from dry ground. In Kolkata humidity, once a month from October to May is plenty, and during the monsoon it may need nothing at all. If you are unsure, wait another week.
Any light except harsh afternoon sun
It grows fastest in bright indirect light and survives genuine gloom. A bathroom with a small window, a hallway, an office desk away from the glass: all fine. Direct afternoon sun through glass can scorch the leaf edges.
Keep it slightly pot-bound
It flowers and grows better when the roots are snug. Repot only when the pot is visibly bulging or roots push out of the base, and go up one size only.
The mistake that kills them
A decorative pot with no drainage hole. Water collects at the bottom where you cannot see it, and the base of the leaves goes soft and brown. If you love a pot without a hole, keep the plant in its nursery pot inside it and lift it out to water.
Worth knowing: snake plant is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. If you have a pet that nibbles, put it up high or choose an areca palm or a parlour palm instead.
