Air purifying plants: what they can and cannot do
Plants do clean air, but not at the rate the internet claims. Here is the honest version.

We sell air purifying plants and we would rather you bought them for the right reason. So here is the honest position.
Where the claim comes from
A NASA study in 1989 sealed plants in small chambers with specific chemicals and measured the fall. Several houseplants removed meaningful amounts. That result is real, and it is where every list you have read comes from.
Why a room is not a chamber
A sealed laboratory chamber is a few cubic feet with no air exchange. Your living room has doors, windows and a fan. Later work has estimated you would need a great many plants per room to match the effect of simply opening a window for a few minutes.
What plants genuinely do
They raise humidity, which helps in dry December air. They soften noise slightly. And there is reasonable evidence that having greenery in a room you work in lowers stress and improves concentration. Those benefits are real and measurable in ordinary homes.
If air quality is your main worry
In a city winter, a mechanical air purifier with a HEPA filter does what plants cannot. Buy plants for how they make a room feel and look. Buy a purifier for particulate matter. They are not substitutes for one another.
The plants on the list anyway
Areca palm, snake plant, money plant, peace lily, spider plant and rubber plant are the ones that performed best in the original work. They are also, conveniently, among the easiest plants to keep alive in an Indian flat.
