How Do You Keep Indoor Plants Alive in an Air-Conditioned Room in India?

Air conditioning dries the air and chills the roots. Pick tough plants like snake plant, ZZ plant and money plant, water less often, and keep them off the direct AC blast.

An air-conditioned room is the hardest place in an Indian home for most indoor plants. The AC pulls moisture out of the air and drops the temperature around the roots, and a plant that was thriving on a humid balcony will struggle a metre from the vent. But with the right plant and a few habits, an AC room can still grow plants happily.

What does air conditioning do to indoor plants?

Two things. It dries the air, which makes moisture-loving plants like ferns and calathea crisp at the edges. And it chills the roots, which slows growth and can cause the soil to stay wet longer than it should, because the plant is not drinking. The result is often a plant that looks fine but slowly declines.

Which indoor plants survive an air-conditioned room?

  • Snake plant holds water in thick leaves, so it copes with dry air. The snake plant is the most forgiving plant for an AC room.
  • ZZ plant stores water in its rhizomes and tolerates low humidity. A ZZ plant barely notices an air-conditioned room.
  • Money plant grows in dry air and poor light. The green money plant is a classic Indian survivor.
  • Peace lily handles it well, though it may flower less. A peace lily tells you when it needs water by drooping.
  • Rubber plant has thick, leathery leaves that suit dry air. The rubber plant makes a statement and is low-maintenance.

How should you care for plants in an AC room?

  • Keep them off the direct blast. Put them a metre or two away from the vent, where the air is not hitting the leaves.
  • Water less. The plant drinks slowly in a cool room, so the soil stays wet longer. Check with a finger before watering.
  • Add a little humidity. Group plants together, or stand them on a tray of pebbles and water, so they create their own humid microclimate.
  • Move the plant, not the room. If you have a plant that needs moisture, give it a humid spot like a bathroom or kitchen instead of fighting the AC.

What should you avoid in an air-conditioned room?

Ferns, calathea and most delicate foliage plants. They need humidity that an AC room cannot give, and their leaf edges will brown no matter how well you water. If you love them, keep them somewhere the air stays moist.

Where should you start?

If you are furnishing an AC living room or a bedroom with the AC on all night, start with our drought-tolerant plants and snake plants. They are built for the conditions you actually have.
