Monstera leaves against a pale wall

Most “best indoor plants” lists are written for dry, air-conditioned Western homes. Your home in India is the opposite. For much of the year the air sits above sixty percent humidity, and a plant that thrives in a dry Delhi office may sulk in a Kolkata living room. The good news is that humidity is a gift. The right plants grow faster here than almost anywhere else.

What makes an Indian home different for indoor plants?

Three things decide whether an indoor plant survives your house, and none of them are about talent. Humidity is high for most of the year, which helps tropical foliage but rots plants that need to dry out. Light is filtered by balconies, overhangs and close neighbours, so many “bright” rooms are only medium light. And temperature swings from hot, humid summers to a mild, dry winter, with air-conditioning in between. Pick a plant for those three conditions first. Everything else is detail.

Which indoor plants actually thrive in Indian humidity?

These are the plants we grow and see do well in Indian homes. Each one enjoys the moisture your air already has.

  • Monstera grows big and glossy in humid air. A Monstera deliciosa loves the warmth and is one of the most rewarding indoor plants here.
  • Philodendron trails and climbs happily. The heart-leaf philodendron is one of the easiest plants for a humid Indian home.
  • Peace lily drinks the humidity and tells you when it is thirsty by drooping. A peace lily is the best starter plant we sell.
  • Snake plant is tough and forgiving. The snake plant tolerates neglect better than almost anything.
  • ZZ plant stores water and shrugs off irregular care. A ZZ plant is the one to buy if you forget to water.

What indoor plants should you avoid in a humid Indian home?

Desert plants. Succulents, cacti and adenium are built for dry air and fast-draining soil. In a closed, humid room they hold water in their stems and rot from the roots up. If you love a succulent, keep it on a sunny balcony where the air moves, not in the living room. Also skip anything marketed as needing constant misting: in a Kolkata home you already have the moisture it wants.

How do you choose the right plant for the light you have?

Where should you start?

Start with the room, not the plant. Check how much light it gets, then pick from our indoor plants range, which lists the light and water needs on every page. If you want plants that forgive a missed week, our low-maintenance plants are the place to begin.
