Low-light plants that actually survive
North-facing rooms need species, not grow lights. Three of ours will hold their colour six feet from a window.

North-facing rooms need the right species, not a grow light. Here is how to tell what you have and what will cope.
What “low light” actually means
Almost every room that people describe as bright is medium light, and almost every corner described as fine is low light. The distinction is not about how the room feels to you — your eyes adapt in seconds, and a plant cannot.
The ten-second test
Stand where the plant will live, at midday, on an ordinary overcast day. If you could read a paperback comfortably without switching on a lamp, that is medium light. If you would reach for the switch, treat the spot as low light and choose accordingly.
Distance matters more than direction
A south-facing window is bright at the glass and unremarkable eight feet back. Light falls away far faster than people expect, so a plant on a sideboard across the room from a big window is often in lower light than one on a north-facing sill.
What survives, and what only tolerates
Snake plants, ZZ plants and pothos genuinely hold their colour and keep a slow rhythm of new leaves in low light. Parlour palms manage it too. These are the plants we send to north-facing flats without hesitation.
Plants that will merely hang on
Monsteras, calatheas and most flowering plants survive low light without thriving in it: they stop producing leaves, lose their variegation and slowly thin out. They are not the wrong plants — they are in the wrong spot.
Expect slower everything
In low light a plant uses less water, grows less and needs feeding less. The most common way to kill a low-light plant is to keep watering it as though it were still growing fast. Check the soil and let the plant set the pace.
Grow lights are usually unnecessary
For a normal home, choosing the right species is cheaper, quieter and better looking than adding hardware. Save grow lights for a windowless room or a specific plant you refuse to give up on.
